“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and listening to his I Have A Dream speech has left me feeling the feels.
Dr. King had a spark burning inside of him, as a response to injustices he saw, felt, and lived. As many in his time did, he longed to see change happen in the culture around him. This man, however, was willing to put his own comfort aside to pursue a cause that consumed him.
He wanted to make the world around him a better place, and he made a decision to step outside of the status quo to pursue that dream. He put himself in harm’s way because he had something he so deeply believed in, that he couldn’t not do it.
This passion for something he believed in, I wonder, do you have something like that, too? At Upward Motion we want to inspire you to pursue that spark that burns within. Perhaps you want to address gross injustices, as Dr. King did, or maybe it’s something on a smaller scale. Maybe you want to make your own life better, or your family or your neighborhood.
I get it: it feels scary. But sometimes you have to take that first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase. Certainly Dr. King couldn’t know how events would unfold. But he knew enough to stand up and fight for a cause near and dear to him.
Be brave. Martin Luther King, Jr. certainly was, and he elevated life for so many.
Friend, what difference do you want to make in your community? In your family? In your neighborhood? In your state? Country? World?
Take that first step.
