What I Love About Being a Personal Trainer

I’ve just gotten home from the gym after a full morning of training clients and as usual, I’m all abuzz with thoughts. In this role as a Personal Trainer, I meet all kinds of inspiring people. Let me share about a few…

A few of my clients are in my same demographic: mid-to-late 50s (and early 60s). We’re all bumping into the realities of getting older, and we all want to feel strong and capable and ready for adventure in this phase of life. One client was an athlete as a young woman, but really hasn’t engaged much with fitness beyond walking and gardening. She tells me she wants to feel strong in her body, but is a little intimidated by walking into the gym (“Where do I begin?”). A couple of other clients have had injuries resulting in surgeries, which has led to weaknesses they want to strengthen. They feel held back from the life they want to live. I have an older gentleman who was an impressive adventurer as a young man, but as an octagenarian, balance has become an issue. I’m thinking also of a special needs client who also has balance issues. And then there are the women in their 30s and 40s who have put on a few unwanted pounds, who want to lean out and feel strong.

These inspiring stories around found only in the four walls of the gym, of course. I’ve helped clients online, as well as in their homes. Getting stronger isn’t limited to a gym. But it all starts in the mind, with inspiration to become stronger, so they can live life more confidently.

I am deeply impressed and inspired by all these people. They are taking control of their own destinies and have made concrete action to reach their goals. After all, no one can do it for us. They each come with their own background issues, but they are all doing the same thing: making their lives better.

And it’s not just the physical. We all know that the physical, mental, emotional and even spiritual are all combined. As these clients increase their strength, so many other aspects in their lives improve.

These good vibes can’t help but inspire me. I feel blessed to play a role in their quest to be better, in body AND soul.

Caffeine: Friend or Fiend?

Chances are, many of us consume caffeine on a regular – if not daily – basis. So how does this relate to our health?

Caffeine is easily the most widely consumed stimulant on the planet. Close to 90 percent of all adults consume about 200 mg per day, mostly in the form of coffee (one regular cup of coffee is about 100 mg of caffeine). Anyone who has become reliant on caffeine knows that it enhances alertness, cognition, reaction time, athletic performance, and possibly even lowers the risk of Alzheimers.

No Man is an Island

“No man is an island.”

So said poet John Donne in a sermon way back in 1624. We all need to be part of a greater whole, belonging to others in society. Man was meant to have relationships, to share life with others.
