Tell Me, What is it You Plan to Do?

There’s a great quote by Mary Oliver that’s rocking my world lately:

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

That quote: Stare it down. Look it in the eyes. Don’t look away.

Do you have an answer?

We’ve all been given a few gifts. The first is life itself. You were created and you are here. You are gifted with a combination of strengths, talents, interests, abilities, experiences, knowledge – gifted in a way that is unique to only you. You are one of a kind.

You matter. We need you.

The world becomes a better place when we each come alive and do the things we feel called to do. I’m not talking about the things of our lower nature. Like, maybe I hear chocolate calling me from the cupboard, but I’m not called to go eat it all (shut up, Chocolate). Or the latest Netflix show is out and I’m feeling the pull to go binge watch.

What things are calling you from your higher nature? You bear the fingerprint of your Creator and within you lies possibility for so much goodness. How will you make the world a better place? How will you bless others with your unique giftings?

It’s too easy (and a copout) to look at Mother Teresa and think, “Oh, I could never impact the world like she did.” But can you make a meal for your neighbor who has just come home from surgery? Can you babysit for the young widow down the street?

That’s not your thing? Well, do you have any hobbies? How can you use them to make life better for someone else? Can you entertain others with your musical skills, giving them respite from the stresses of life? Can you create art that touches the deeper parts of a person’s soul? Does your ability to write help others think big thoughts, stimulating them to live a richer life? Can you share wisdom with those who don’t have the experience that you do, saving them from unnecessary pain? Do you have the ability to create community around an interest or hobby? We all want connection. Are you a good listener? OMGracious. The world is in need of good listeners. Do that, for starters.

Can you smile? Share that. You will make someone’s day, guaranteed. Win-win.

What about starting a business that meets a need in your community? Think about the establishments that you appreciate. Ask the proprietors how they did it. They’ll be glad to share what worked and what didn’t.

Is there something big and kinda crazy you want to do but don’t have the skills to execute it? Don’t disqualify yourself because you don’t have what it takes right now. Instead, ask yourself what training you need to get there. You are smart, you are alive, you are a learner. Google it, jam on helpful YouTube vids, take a class, learn from other people… go develop the skills needed to accomplish your thing. You can do this.

This is purpose. This is blessing others. This is fulfillment in life. This is what we all want.

So tell me, what is it you plan to do with your life?

The world is waiting.

Real Change

Have you ever heard the saying, “Real change requires real change?”

It’s so simple yet so powerful.

If we want things to change, there needs to be a change in the way we live our lives. If you have a business that you want to see grow, you must implement new ways of doing things. If you keep on marketing in the same old ways, you’ll get the same old results.

Sibling Tour

I’ve recently returned from a quick sibling tour. It’s like an ’80s rock band doing a tour (road trip, lots of music, big hair), except way cooler because it involved getting to know my family more.

A Holistic Approach to Breast Health

Did you know that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

My husband asked me recently if breast cancer is something that women think about much. I can say that I certainly do. If we haven’t personally had breast cancer, we all know someone who has or whose life has been touched by it. This can cause us to live in fear.

Weight Matters

Love your body at any size. Yes and amen.

It saddens me to hear of people who’ve equated their size with their value as a person. Your weight is only a measure of your body against gravity. It doesn’t tell about your kindness, generosity, empathy, helpfulness, creativity, intelligence, love, et cetera.
